Apotheken Umschau: Print and digital with the InterRed editorial system

  • 01.03.2023

Apotheken Umschau, the print magazine with the widest reach in Germany from Wort & Bild Verlag, relies on the InterRed editorial system for multi-channel publishing in print and digital channels. Following the creation of a standardised editorial workplace for the approximately 80 health editors and the successful relaunch of the website, InterRed is also used for the print production of Apotheken Umschau.

A centralised editorial system for everything

Apotheken Umschau is read by around 18 million readers in print and over 7 million users online every month and is the largest health magazine in Germany with a circulation of over 7 million copies.
Thanks to the central integration of InterRed into the workflows and processes of Wort & Bild Verlag, employees benefit from the advantages of a standardised editorial workplace. Content is created, managed and published in one and the same system for both the extensive website (with all the publisher's brands) and the various print magazines. The numerous functions contained in this solution support efficient workflows in everyday editorial work. These include, for example, the entire correction workflow, which optimises the joint coordination of articles and content by integrating inline comments directly at the appropriate point in the text. At the same time, this comment function can also be used in Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy thanks to the special InterRed plugins. The numerous external contributors and proofreaders, as well as the scientific editors who review independently of each other, benefit from the shared functions in order to meet the high standards of medical and content quality and correctness.
The digital asset management integrated into InterRed enables the management of all media content, including all images, photos, audio and video content used for the publications. At the same time, the integrated royalty management for images enables the automatic creation of royalty rates. And InterRed MediaSync makes it much easier to reuse and exploit content.

Intelligent content synchronisation for cross-media reuse

InterRed MediaSync as an integral part of the InterRed multi-channel publishing solution enables the intelligent synchronisation of content across media and objects. This means that content can not only be used and utilised multiple times, but can also be adjusted and adapted to suit specific channels or media at any time. In the case of Apotheken Umschau, this leads to simplified reutilisation of content in the publisher's various properties and output channels. This includes all other print magazines as well as the entire online and digital area.

Previously independent websites of the magazines of Wort & Bild Verlag have been integrated into the main brand presence and the apotheken-umschau.de website, including the websites of ‘Senioren Ratgeber’, ‘Diabetes Ratgeber’ and ‘Baby und Familie’. Thanks to the integration into a large, joint brand presence, the website benefits from both a wider reach and greater visibility.

Dr Johann Kempe, Chief Technology Officer at Wort & Bild Verlag: ‘The introduction of InterRed has enabled us to completely standardise the various content sources and output channels. Thanks to optimised and accelerated processes, we benefit from flexible preparation, reuse and channel-specific output of our content. This allows us to present our content to readers in a variety of ways.’

Dr Dennis Ballwieser, Managing Director of Wort & Bild Verlag and Editor-in-Chief of Apotheken Umschau: ‘By choosing InterRed as our central editorial system, we are certain that we have set the course for the future. New forms of editorial co-operation in our media group and product innovations will be promoted and accelerated as a result.’
