Online-appearance of the non-profit organization Aktion Mensch (formerly Aktion Sorgenkind).
At the start there was a courageous idea. And a breaking of a taboo. Disabled people, before often hidden and patronized, should not longer be the outsiders of society. They should not anymore be only people who have to be looked after, but people who are taken seriously with their handicaps. The trigger for this was the shock caused by the thalidomide-catastrophe and the conclusion: 'We need to do something'. This led to the formation of Aktion Sorgenkind in 1964. And with this an organization which, for the first time, brought disable children to the focus of society, by an unsparing media coverage in the ZDF, an until then unique appeal for money, and a social lottery which today is the largest in Germany.
